UAB Opens Conference Play Against Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB softball team will travel to Tulsa, Okla., to begin Conference USA play with a three-game series against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (12-10). The Blazers will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and finish up the series on Sunday at noon.
UAB (14-9) heads into the weekend with a three-game winning streak, the longest of the season. Tulsa is coming off a 2-0 win against Oklahoma and riding a four-game winning streak.
The Blazers are 4-2 against the Golden Hurricane, including a 1-0 record at Tulsa. UAB took two out of three in Birmingham last season. Before dropping the final game of last year's series, UAB had won three in a row over Tulsa.
Overall, the Blazers have outscored the Golden Hurricane 17-16. Three out of the six matchups have been decided by one run, while the other three were decided by two runs.
Scouting Tulsa: After winning its first Conference USA championship in 2006, the University of Tulsa softball team was picked second in the 2007 pre-season poll by the league's coaches. Junior Sara Dyer and sophomore Brooke Smart were also selected to the pre-season all-conference teams. Dyer currently leads the team with 26 RBI and a .438 batting average. Freshman Vanessa Vice has also stepped up for the Golden Hurricane, batting .484 in 31 at-bats. Senior Julie Fennell and freshman Jackie Lawrence lead Tulsa in the circle. Fennell is 3-4 with a 2.20 ERA, while Lawrence holds a 6-2 record with a 2.95 ERA.
