BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team battled Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire tough, but ended up dropping a 1-0 decision in spring soccer action.
The two teams played even soccer over the opening 45 minutes, with both teams struggling to find the back of the net. The Fire broke through in the 54th minute of action to score the game's lone goal.
The Blazers had several scoring opportunities towards the end of the contest, but could not capitalize. Overall, head coach Mike Getman felt his team played well and created a number of chances during the contest.
"I felt we played well overall," Getman said. "We showed we can hold our own against a very good soccer team. We are delighted that the Chicago Fire were able to play us during their preseason schedule and give us the opportunity. It is something that is going to make us a better soccer team in the long run."
Getman was most pleased with his squad's defensive effort over the entire contest.
"We played solid defense for most of the game," Getman said. "I thought (goalkeeper) Wes Johnson played well and made some terrific saves to keep us in the game."
The spring campaign concludes with a game on Saturday, April 7 (3 p.m.), against West Florida. Admission to West Campus Field is free to the general public.
