Women's Tennis Wins Two on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team picked up a pair of victories Sunday afternoon by beating Chattanooga, 4-2, before going on to get its first Conference USA win of the season against Memphis, 6-0, at Brook Highland Racquet Club. UAB improves to 5-1 (1-0 C-USA) with the victories.
Both started and were decided with singles and no doubles contests were held in either match.
In the team's first match of the day against Chattanooga, the Blazers lost at both flight one and two singles. Senior Julia von Samson continued her strong play for the weekend as she earned a routine 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 three singles.
Senior Annemieke Elsholz needed three sets at flight four before ultimately winning the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 5, freshman Magdalena Czernik won 6-0, 6-2, while junior Seden Soyalp won 6-0, 6-0 at flight six.
"Our depth once again came to our rescue because Chattanooga has excellent players at the top," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "The match came down to our No. 4 match, which went to a third set and I was glad Annemike won the third set in a clutch situation."
Against the Tigers of Memphis, junior Gulsah Esen won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and senior Nischa Maier-Knapp won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Von Samson won yet again at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.
At flight four, senior Samrin Tanzeem earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while at No. 5, senior Antonia Nugent won in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Soyalp won at flight six by default.
"I was very impressed with both Nischa and Gulsah at the top two positions against Memphis," Ertunga said. "They both lost tough match a few hours earlier, yet they came back and fully focused on the task and played good matches to lead us to a victory against a conference opponent."
The Blazers will next be in action next Saturday when they travel to play Arkansas State at 3 p.m.
