BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team and head coach Mike Getman announced the 2007 spring schedule, which begins this Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. against Montevallo. The schedule is highlighted by games against Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and United Soccer League's Atlanta Silverbacks. In all, the Blazers will play six games on the spring slate, five of which will be contested at West Campus Field.
"I am very excited about this spring schedule and look forward to the challenge ahead," Getman said. "Our guys have been preparing hard for the spring season and we look forward to going against some very good competition."
Following the game against Montevallo on Saturday, the Blazers will next host Division III power Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. Both games will be free admission to the public.
Former Blazer Jerson Monteiro will face his former teammates as a professional player when he leads the Fire against the Blazers on March 29, at 4 p.m. in Jackson, Miss. Monteiro, who graduated ranked second in the program's all-time scoring and points list, was the eighth overall selection of the Fire during the 2007 MLS SuperDraft.
Two other former Blazers will return to the field when UAB takes on the Silverbacks on March 25, at 1 p.m. Former men's soccer players Tony McManus and Jason McLaughlin will make their return to West Campus Field.
The spring campaign concludes with a game on Saturday, April 7 (3 p.m.), against West Florida, followed by the annual UAB alumni game at 2 p.m. on April 14.
Getman and the Blazers are coming off their 13th consecutive 10-win season. The Blazers finished the campaign with a 10-6-4 overall record, including victories over five ranked teams on the 2006 campaign. UAB will have to replace Jerson Monteiro, who was the eighth overall pick of the Chicago Fire in this year's MLS Draft, along with five other seniors who graduated.
Getman's 2007 club returns eight starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2006 campaign.
