BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team defeated Georgia State, 6-1, on Friday at Brook Highland Racquet Club. Senior Annemieke Elsholz won a pair of matches on the day at number one doubles and number three singles. The Blazers are now 2-0 on the season and will take on Birmingham-Southern on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
The Blazers got on the board early by winning the doubles point. Elsholz and senior Julia von Samson won 8-1 at number one and then junior Antonia Nugent and freshman Magdalena Czernik squeaked out a 9-7 win at number three. Georgia State won 8-5 and number two.
"I was really pleased with the way Magdalena and Antonia fiished the doubles despite blowing an early lead," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Magdalena served and returned very well in that match."
In singles play, junior Gulsha Esen lost 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 at number one, while senior Nischa Maier-Knapp won a tightly contested match at number two 7-6, 7-6. Elsholz won in straight sets at number three, 6-2, 6-4, and senior Samrin Tanzeem came back to win 4-6, 6-0, 10-6 at flight four.
Czernik clinched the match at number five and Nugent cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number six.
"Overall this was a very solid performance," Ertunga said. "Our singles play was very pleasing. Ironically our only loss in singles, Gulsah, was possibly the one who played her best tennis so far this season. I am not surprised though, she has been very dedicated in practice this year."
The Blazers will return to the courts on Monday when they play a rescheduled match against Birmingham-Southern at 2:30 p.m. at the BSC courts.
