BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Stevie Bennett, a sophomore infielder for the UAB softball team, was named a 2006-07 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athlete, as announced by the association on Friday.
A native of Oxford, Ala., Bennett earns the honor for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher during the academic year. In high school, she was a three-year of the Beta Club and a member of the National Honor Society.
"I'm very happy that Stevie received this distinction," head coach Marla Townsend said. "This really shows the dedication that she has not only on the field, but in the classroom."
Bennett, a walk-on last season, hit .250 in four games for the Blazers, and could have a much larger role this year according to Townsend.
"Stevie is one of our toughest workers," Townsend said. "She continues to get better every week. We hope she will play a larger role for us this year."
During high school, Bennett led Oxford team to a fourth-place finish in the Alabama State tournament, and earned two team MVPs while playing at Faith Christain High School.
UAB softball will be in action for the final time Saturday during the fall season at the third-annual "Knocking Cancer out of the Ballpark" softball tournament. The Blazers (5-0) will play UAH at 12:15 p.m. and Samford at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the softball field on the campus of Samford.
