BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB cross country team returns to action Friday after a two week break from competition, to participate in the Tiger Twilight Invitational hosted by The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Blazers were originally scheduled to compete this weekend at the Pre-National Meet, but head coach Ray Stanfield felt this race would better prepare his team for the Conference USA Championships in two weeks.
"This meet is on a great course and it's a 6K event, which will be the first for our two freshmen," Stanfield said. "With this being a shorter trip and on a Friday, it allows us to not interrupt our training as much as the originally scheduled meet."
The teams schedule to participate at the Tiger Twilight will include Emory University, Georgia College and State University, Johnson Bible College and The University of the South.
Stanfield said moving to a "smaller and low key" meet will help the team recovery from some illnesses and build the team's confidence heading into the conference championship, which the Blazers won last season.
"This will be a smaller and low key meet for us," Stanfield said. "I felt like this is the best thing for us to do to prepare for the C-USA Championship later this month."
This will be the first time the Blazers have raced since the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28, when UAB placed 19th out of 21 teams.
