Tennis Teams Launch New Season at UTC Fall Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The UAB men's and women's tennis teams began their 2006-07 season at the UTC Baras Collegiate Fall Classic on Friday with rain forcing play to move indoors. The change of venue worked out nicely for UAB's Tim Bauer who upset the top seed in the men's flight A singles draw, while Julia von Samson won a pair of matches in the women's flight A singles draw.
Bauer won his first match as a member of the Blazers by beating top-seeded Domagoj Anic, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the second round where he earned another victory, beating Lucas de Brito 6-3, 6-2. He will compete in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Joining Bauer in Saturday's quarterfinal will be Jahannes Spangenberg who needed three sets to win his opening round match before ousting Mike Sherman, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.
Alex Emory earned a pair of victories for the Blazers in the flight C singles draw, beating Brandon Joost, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal round. Adrian Tallstam played just one match on Friday, beating Gonzola Olmeda, 6-1, 6-2.
In the flight C draw, Kruno Desptovski cruised through his portion of the draw, winning 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before beating Daniel Hangstefer, 6-2, 6-2 in the second. Thomas Weiss also competed in the "C" draw, losing in a tiebreaker for the third set, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6, in the opening round.
On the women's side, Von Samson lost just three games in her opening round match before beating Sara Leavy in her second match, 6-3, 6-4. UAB's Gulshah Esen went the distance in her first match, winning 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 against Elizma Schoones before losing in the second round to Martina Nitkova, 6-1, 6-2. Nischa Maier-Knapp was the top seed in the women's "A" draw, however was ousted in the opening round in the third set super-breaker, 11-9.
Three Blazers advanced to the second round of the "B" draw as Samrin Tanzeem won 6-3, 6-0, while Antonia Nugent won 6-2, 6-1. Anna Meike Eisholz also lost just three games in her first match, winning 6-0, 6-3.
In the "C" draw, Seden Soyalp won a pair of tight matches to play her way into the quarterfinals. She beat Mercer's Kelly Blount, 7-5, 7-6 (6) in her first match before beating Kimberly Ferris, 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 in the second round. Magdalena Czernik was successful as well on Friday, beating Sharon Makhanya in the opening round 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
The Blazers will resume action at the event on Saturday with the finals set to wrap-up on Sunday.
