Softball Advances To Conference USA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team finished tied for second in the final Conference USA standings and will be a fourth-seed heading into the conference tournament on May 11-13 in Tulsa, Okla., at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The Blazers are 31-20 this season and finished 15-9 in C-USA action. UAB returns to the tournament for the first time since the 2003 season and will battle East Carolina Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
"We are excited to back in the Conference USA Tournament and look to make a run at the title," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We have had one of our best seasons in school history and look at the tournament as a great opportunity for us to make the NCAA field. Its key for us to carry our momentum into Thursday's game against East Carolina and play well."
Tulsa claimed the 2006 C-USA regular season softball crown. The Golden Hurricane earned the No. 1 seed at the upcoming tournament and will be the host school. Marshall, Houston and UAB all finished with identical 15-9 records to tie for second place in the league standings. The Thundering Herd earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of owning a combined 4-2 record against the Cougars and Blazers. Houston will be the No. 3 seed after posting a 3-3 record against Marshall and UAB, while the Blazers will be the No. 4 seed after going 2-4 against the respective clubs.
ECU won six straight C-USA contests to close out the regular season and earn the No. 5 seed at the Championship. Southern Miss earned the No. 6 seed for the second straight year and finished at 11-13 in C-USA.
Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST and will be carried live on CSTV. The winner of the six-team championship will earn the league's automatic bid the NCAA Championship.
