BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Recent Atlanta Silverbacks signee Jason McLaughlin turned the tables on his former teammates Wednesday evening, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal for his new team against his old club in Atlanta's 2-0 exhibition men's soccer win over UAB at West Campus Field. Fellow former Blazer Tony McManus assisted on McLaughlin's tally as well.
"Certainly, I'm disappointed we gave up two goals," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "But outside of those two plays, I was pleased with how we played and thought we played well. We created chances and very well could have scored a goal or two against a professional team. It was a good performance against a very good team."
The Silverbacks are a first division professional club in the United Soccer League. McLaughlin, fellow 2005 senior Maurice Hughes and McManus are all on Atlanta's roster.
Omar Jarun added the Silverback's second goal on a header five minutes into the second half. McLaughlin's goal came in the 37th minute of play.
"Jason's goal was a good play and the corner kick goal was a good strike as well," Getman said. "But I was very pleased with the way we played for the last 45 minutes. It was a learning experience for us which is what spring play is all about."
