UAB Softball Hosts First-Place Houston This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team is scheduled to host first-place Houston this weekend in a three-game series at George Ward Park. The Blazers are currently fourth in the conference standings with a 27-18 overall mark and are 11-7 in Conference USA. The Cougars enter the series on a seven game winning streak and have a 35-18 overall record.
UAB and the Cougars will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. before playing the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday will also be Diamond Club Appreciate Day with Sunday being Senior Day honoring Chelsea McCall.
UAB is led by junior Lindsay Stanley, who leads the team with a .346 batting average and has started every game in the outfield. Sophomore Holly Krzan has been a major contributor as well, hitting .331 with six home runs and 38 RBI. Sophomore Jennifer Nelson has been pitching well for UAB. The hard throwing lefthander threw a six inning perfect game against Alabama A&M on April 18. Nelson is 13-8 overall with a 1.87 ERA in 24 appearances.
UH leads the all-time series with UAB, 11-4 and has won the last nine meetings. However, both teams have won three games in Birmingham. The last UAB victory over the Cougars came in Birmingham on April 28, 2002. The Blazers defeated UH, 9-1, to sweep a three-game series. Last season, UAB traveled to Houston and dropped two close games.
The Cougars are 12-6 in C-USA this year and have a 9-12 road record. UH is led by Jessica Valia at the plate and Angel Shamblin in the circle. Valia leads UH with a .373 batting average and ranks second in Conference USA. Shamblin is 14-6 overall in 26 appearances with a 1.54 ERA. As a team, the Cougars have five pitchers that have a combined ERA under three.
