HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Freshman Christina Wentworth's rounds of 72-73 Monday put the UAB standout in second place and just four strokes off the lead at the 2006 Southern Miss Lady Eagle Invitational. UAB is in 8th place out of 11 teams with a round to play at the par 72, 6,109-yard Canebrake Golf Course.
"We shot better in round two than round one, so it was pleasing to see progress," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Our whole team has had to step up since we're playing with four. That means there's no high score to drop and everyone counts. We came though fairly well today and I'm proud of our effort."
Janey Deimling helped anchor UAB's efforts with rounds of 78-72. The lone senior on UAB's squad is tied for ninth place overall. Ashlee Claydon shot identical 81s in the first two rounds while freshman Krista Tressler improved from 86 to 84 in the day's second 18.
UAB is playing without junior Martha Hudson who is resting her sore left shoulder in preparation for next week's Conference USA tournament in Greenville, N.C.
Memphis has the early team lead after placing four golfers in the top 15 and three in the top 10 after two rounds. Stacey Tate's 71-70 tops the leaderboard just in front of Wentworth. The Tigers' team rounds of 292 and 296 are good enough for a 588 score after 36 holes and a 14-stroke lead on Middle Tennessee State.
MTSU (298-304=602), South Alabama (301-305=606), host Southern Miss (316-303=619) and West Florida (317-304=621) round out the top five.
UAB's rounds of 317-310=627 have the Blazers five shots behind New Orleans and eight ahead of Samford.
The third and final round will be played Tuesday. It is the final round of regular season play before UAB participates in next week's C-USA Championships.
