GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Freshman Christina Wentworth fired an impressive one-under 71 Sunday and sits just two strokes off the lead in a tie for second place at the 2006 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship. UAB is tied for sixth in the field with Memphis after the first of three rounds on the par-72, 6,216-yard Ironwood Country Club Course.
Wentworth, a strong candidate for Conference USA Freshman of the Year, trails UTEP's Gerina Mendoza, whose three-under 69 tops the first round leaderboard. Wentworth is tied with Tulsa's Mechaela Cavener.
"Christina did what we expect Christina to do, which is go out and compete for the lead," UAB head women's golf coach Kim Wilcox said. "As a team, we had some high points, but still need one or two more golfers to step up and improve. We're in a good spot and have confidence heading to Monday which is where I wanted to be."
Martha Hudson's four-over 76 is tied for 22nd overall. Janey Deimling is four shots back at 80 and Krista Trellser's 11-over 83 is close behind. Ashlee Claydon carded a 15-over 87 in the first round.
UAB's team score of 310 is tied with Memphis and seven shots behind UCF's fifth-place 303. UTEP leads the way with a first-round 292, followed by Tulsa (295), East Carolina (297) and SMU (298). The Blazers have a two stroke lead on Marshall. Southern Miss rounds out the nine-team field with a first-round 321.
The second 18 will play Monday with the third and final round Tuesday at Ironwood. UAB finished 8th in last year's championships.
