BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB freshman Kayla Harris was named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week Monday after helping lead the Blazers to a 4-1 record last week. UAB split a doubleheader with Georgia State before sweeping UCF. UAB swept its second C-USA series this season to improve to 24-16 overall and 10-5 in the conference.
Harris made the most of her two appearances in the circle last week, as she tossed a pair of two-hit shutouts in picking up victories over Georgia State and UCF. In the Blazers' 1-0 victory over the Panthers on Wednesday, Harris struck out four and in a 2-0 win over UCF on Saturday, she fanned five Golden Knights. The right-hander improved to 9-4 on the season and helped herself offensively; going 4-for-5 at the plate in her two wins. Harris is the second Blazer to win the pitching honor this season, joining sophomore Jennifer Nelson.
Harris and the Blazers continue conference play this weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss. UAB will open a three-game series with Southern Miss Friday in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Complete coverage of UAB softball can be found at www.uabsports.com.
