UAB Women's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

DENVER, Colo. ----- The UAB women's tennis team split two matches this weekend, as it beat North Texas Friday afternoon before falling to Denver Saturday. The Blazers took on both teams at the Stapleton Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Denver. With the split, UAB moved to 5-4 on the season.
On Friday, UAB recorded a 6-1 victory over the Mean Green after taking the doubles point and winning five-of-six singles matches. The Blazers took the top two doubles contests, as well as the No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles spots.
Ornischa Maier-Knapp captured the No. 1 match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over North Texas' Ina Wieding. In No. 2 singles, UAB's Julia von Samson was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 winner over Lynley Wasson, while Annemieke Elsholz beat Sammie Moreton, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 3 slot. In the No. 4 tilt, UAB's Gulsah Esen defeated Aziza Aba Butain, 6-2, 6-2, before Seden Soyalp tallied a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Sara Giles at No. 6 singles.
Saturday afternoon, UAB fell to Denver, 7-0. The Pioneers took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then swept through all six singles positions for the victory.
UAB hosts Jacksonville State Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
