BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB sophomore Jennifer Nelson has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. Nelson is a Morris, Ala., native and has helped UAB match its best start in school history at 18-7. The hard throwing left hander is 8-1 on the year with a 1.08 ERA in 11 appearances.
"Jennifer (Nelson) is very deserving of the honor for what she has done since coming off an injury," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "She has been our leader and has been a big reason for our recent success. This team does a great job of complimenting each other and it has shown. We hope to continue to build our confidence and finish the season strong."
Nelson led the Blazers to the their first C-USA series sweep since the 2004 season as UAB took three straight from East Carolina on the road in Greenville. The sophomore allowed just one earned run and fanned 14 in two complete-game victories over the Pirates. For the week, Nelson went 3-0 as she also picked up a complete-game victory over Jacksonville State. Nelson ranks second in C-USA with a 1.08 ERA.
