BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team improved to 7-4 on the season after defeating Tennessee-Martin, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
"We performed much better during the match than was expected and in result we beat a good Tennessee-Martin team," said UAB Mert Ertunga. "I thought everyone played well today but Ornischa (Maier-Knapp) did a great job. I'm extremely happy to see her play such a great match on her birthday. We hope to continue to play well and remain undefeated at home this season."
The Blazers managed to sweep the doubles matches and win the point. Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson played at the No. 1 tilt and beat Katrina Domela and Sara Leavy, 8-4. At the No. 2 position, Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp won 8-1 over Amber Garza and Jeanne De Wet. To ensure the sweep in doubles, Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp won 8-4 in the third flight.
UAB quickly locked up the match after winning three straight singles matches. Nugent easily won the No. 6 spot over Ernestine Koornhof, 6-0, 6-3 and Elsholz won in the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-4. Samrin Tanzeem also won her match over Garza at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Maier-Knapp defeated Domela in the No. 1 tilt.
Despite the match being officially over, Sara Leavy for the Skyhawks managed to win the No. 2 spot in a tie-breaker over von Samson. UAB's Esen also won in a tie-breaker over Elizma Schoonees in the final match of the day at the No. 4 position.
