"We didn't get off to the start we had hoped," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "But there are two rounds to play and not a great deal of distance from back to front. With some sharper play Monday and Tuesday, we'll be alright."
UAB's team score of 318 is one stroke ahead of Coastal Carolina and one behind Mercer. The Blazers are just eight total strokes from the top-10 and 17 shots from the top-five. Osborn shot a three-over par 75 on the par-72, 6,910-yard championship course at Sawgrass Country Club. He is seven stokes off the lead held by UCLA's Eric Flores. Clark Brown's five-over 77 is good for a tie for 20th place individually. Matt King (83, +11), Zack Sucher (83, +11) and Kaylor Timmons (89, +17) also competed for the Blazers.
UCLA's two-over par 290 team score is good enough for the team lead after one round.
The Mercedes Benz Collegiate field is one of UAB's toughest challenges yet. All but three teams are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin's top-50. UAB is ranked No. 42.
