BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will host Nicholls State Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a mid-week doubleheader at George Ward Park Field 6. The Blazers are 4-5 on the season, while the Colonels sit at 4-6.
"We are looking forward to a home doubleheader," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "Last weekend, we played well offensively and defensively at times but we just never could put it all together. Overall, I thought we ended the tournament on a high note and we hope to continue that this week."
UAB and NSU have played once already this season at the Centenary College Tournament in Shreveport, La. The Blazers managed to put on an offensive showcase scoring 11 runs on nine hits. Sophomore Holly Krzan led the way hitting two grand slams and setting a UAB school record with eight RBI. The Blazers hold a 1-0 series advantage but Tuesday will be the first meeting between the programs in Birmingham.
This season, freshman Andrea Rogers is leading the team offensively. Rogers enters the doubleheader tied for the lead in Conference USA with a .476 batting average. She also has a .667 on-base percentage that tops everyone in C-USA. Against Chattanooga, Rogers hit a solo home run over the left field fence for her first career shot. Krzan and junior Nicole Whitlock have also been very productive at the plate this year.
UAB has relied on four pitchers this season. Freshman Kayla Harris has made five appearances and enters the doubleheader with a 1-2 overall mark. Junior Brittany Hodge is 1-2 as well with a 5.25 ERA in five appearances. Sophomore Amanda Antonovich has started two games for the Blazers and has a 1-1 record. Sophomore Jennifer Nelson is the only undefeated pitcher for UAB at 1-0.
The Colonels are led by Kathryn Harrell and Brandi Hahn this year. Harrell has started every game and is hitting .406 in 32 at-bats. Hahn leads the team with nine RBI and brings a .385 average into the games. Jessica Bardsdale and Krystalin Ensming have made at least five appearances this season and have a 2-2 record.
