BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will host No. 20 Auburn Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the 2006 home opener at George Ward Park Field 6. The Blazers (2-0) put their undefeated record on the line against the Tigers (9-1). The match up will be the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools and just the fourth meeting in Birmingham.
"We are looking forward to hosting a very good Auburn team," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We look to build upon our recent success. Some of our best games have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Our goal is to come out and play our best ball. Naturally we want to keep the game close and hopefully have it all come together in our home opener."
Last weekend, the Blazers defeated Nicholls State and Arkansas on the opening day of the 2006 Centenary College Tournament. UAB dominated offensively in the first two games, scoring 20 runs on 19 hits.
At the plate, UAB is led by senior Chelsea McCall, junior Nicole Whitlock and sophomore Holly Krzan. Krzan had one of the most productive games in the history of UAB softball against Nicholls State. She hit two grand slams and set a new school record for most RBI in a single game with eight.
Auburn leads the all-time series over the Blazers, 7-2, including winning the last meeting on Feb. 27 in Palo Alto, Calif. The only two victories for UAB came on the road at Auburn. The Tigers are led by Holly Currie and Sara Ghezzi. Currie leads the team with 17 RBI including two long balls. Ghezzi is hitting .500 with three home runs and eight RBI. Their only loss this season came to Centenary College.
