BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB sophomore Holly Krzan has been named the Conference USA Softball Co-Hitter of the Week after hitting two grand slams in the season opener against Nicholls State and setting a new Blazer single-game record with eight RBI. In two games last weekend, Krzan went 3-for-5 with two home runs and nine RBI as the Blazers jumped out to a 2-0 start on the season.
"It's great to see Holly back on the field and her presence was definitely noticed," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "I would have liked to see her get a few more at-bats but she remained focused and did a great job at the plate."
Last weekend, Krzan was in the lineup for the first time since a knee injury ended her 2005 season. In the second game of the Centenary College Tournament, Krzan went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI in the 9-1 run-rule win over Arkansas.
After playing just 11 games last season, Krzan had a .280 batting average with a home run. In 2004, Krzan was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team after leading the team with 24 runs scored and tied for the team lead in home runs with five. She also hit .247 with 20 RBI, which was second-best on the team.
The Blazers are scheduled to face Auburn Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the 2006 home opener at George Ward Park Field 6. Complete coverage of UAB softball can be found at www.uabsports.com.
