BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will open the 2006 season on the road at the Centenary College Tournament this weekend in Shreveport, La. The Blazers are scheduled to face Nicholls State and Arkansas Friday and Alcorn State and Centenary Saturday.
"We are ready to play and this is what we have been working for," said Blazer head coach Marla Townsend. "We are excited to get on the field and see what we are made of. Every team has played except us but we've had great practices over the last two weeks. Our goal this weekend is to play well and hopefully advance to the championship."
The Blazers enter the year with high expectations after returning seven starters from last year's squad. In 2005, UAB finished seventh in Conference USA with a league mark of 7-16 and 23-37 overall. Junior Lindsay Stanley returns after hitting .335 last year, which set a new UAB single-season record. She also stole 31 bases to lead the conference and finished one shy of the Blazer record.
UAB will face three new opponents this weekend including Nicholls State, Arkansas and Alcorn State. Saturday will feature the fifth meeting between the Blazers and Centenary. UAB has won all four meeting against the Ladies. The last meeting came on Feb. 28 in Tulsa, Okla., with the Blazers holding on to defeat Centenary, 2-1, at the Tulsa Festival.
This weekend will be the fourth game all-time that the Blazers have played in the state of Louisiana. UAB competed in the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge in March of 2002 against McNeese State, Long Island and LSU.
