TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The UAB women's golf team fired a team score of 325 on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,033-yard Ol' Colony Course and finished 12th out of 16 teams at the 2005 Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate women's golf tournament hosted by the University of Alabama. Junior Martha Hudson led the way for the Blazers by shooting a 79 in the third round to finish with a 54-hole total of 233 and tie for 26th on the individual leaderboard.
"It was a good effort," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "We had some first tournament jitters. I'm so proud and not surprised that our upperclassmen, Janey (Deimling) and Martha (Hudson), held it together until the very last hole. Golf is a game of patience and some of our younger players don't realize that college golf is a different set of circumstances. They're learning that now and we'll be better for it in two weeks."
Hudson recorded rounds of 78-76-79 despite being cleared to play a full round of 18 holes just last week. The Black Mountain, N.C., native had off-season shoulder surgery to repair some loose cartilage.
"Martha was determined to come back full strength in the fall and she did what she planned to do," Wilcox said. "She stayed focused and, even though (the shoulder) was getting sore toward the end of the rounds, she hung in there. That's what it takes sometimes. The great news is that she's back to where she was before she was hurt. With some conditioning and practice, she'll start to improve from there."
Deimling, the team's lone senior, birdied her last two holes to finish with rounds of 81-77-78 and tie for 36th place with a 54-hole total of 236. Freshman Christina Wentworth trimmed four shots off her round from Monday to Tuesday, scoring 83-84-80 to tie for 63rd in the 88-person field with a 247. Sophomore Ashlee Claydon shot 86-79-90 in her first tournament for UAB after transferring from Missouri Baptist. She finished 73rd overall with a 255. Junior Lois Jones whittled away at her first round total of 97 to shoot 93 Monday, then 88 on Tuesday. She finished at 278 and in 85th place.
UAB finished ahead of Murray State, Belmont, Samford and Troy. The Blazers were 20 team strokes behind Jacksonville State and just 25 shots from a top-10 finish. Alabama came from behind early leader Augusta State to win the tournament with rounds of 298-304-298. Birmingham-Southern also caught Augusta as the two schools tied for second with three-round totals of 906.
Augusta State's Garrett Phillips' second-round, four-under 68 helped her to a five-shot win in the individual tally. Her three-round total of 213 was three-under for the 54 holes. Michelle Jarman of UNC Wilmington shot a two-over 218 for second place.
UAB takes next weekend off before returning to the links at the Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2. The tournament will be played at the University Club's Big Blue Course in Lexington, Ky.
