TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Junior Martha Hudson shot an opening round 78 to lead UAB's women's golf team at the 2005 Ann Rhoads Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama. The Blazers are in 14th place of 16 teams after the first of three rounds. The tournament is being played at Ol' Colony Golf Course and at par-72, 6,033-yards.
"We got off to a slow start," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "But, we're starting two freshmen and it's the first tournament of the season. We got the opening jitters out today. Now it's time to hunker down and work hard to improve."
Hudson ironically was only cleared to play a full round of 18-holes of golf last week after off-season shoulder surgery. She is tied with eight other golfers in 30th place in the individual standings at five-over-par. Lone senior Janey Deimling's 81 is tied for 51st. Freshman Kristina Wentworth shot an 83 while sophomore transfer Ashlee Claydon (86) and junior Lois Jones (97) also competed for the Blazers.
Augusta State has a one stroke lead over host Alabama on the team leaderboard. Middle Tennessee State, Birmingham-Southern and UNC Wilmington round out the top five. UAB is ahead of Belmont and Troy and just two strokes behind Murray State.
Taryn Durham of MTSU shot a three-under par 69 to take the early individual lead. Garrett Phillips (71) and Lauren Smith (72) of Augusta State are in second and third places, respectively.
The tournament's second round will play Monday with the third and final 18 holes on Tuesday.
