BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Jennifer Collins, who has served as head softball coach at Alabama State the past three years, has been named assistant softball coach at UAB, according to an announcement by Blazers' head coach Marla Townsend on Thursday.
While at Alabama State, Collins was responsible for all aspects of a Division I program including scheduling, recruiting, marketing, fundraising, and was the conference coaches' spokesperson. Before her stint at ASU, she spent a year at Jackson State University working with both the softball and baseball teams.
""We are extremely excited about adding coach Collins to our softball staff," said Townsend. "Her experience as a player, as well as her coaching success, is what we need to get to the next level. Her enthusiasm and love for the game shines and she knows what it takes to win."
Collins played two seasons at Southern Miss from 1998-99. During her time in Hattiesburg, she helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back Women's College World Series appearances. Following her senior season, she was drafted in the second round of the Women's Professional Softball League by the Ohio Pride. Her coaching career started after she returned to Southern Miss as a graduate assistant in August of 2000.
"I'm excited to be hired here at UAB and it is nice to be back in Conference USA," Collins said. "Coach Townsend is an amazing coach and I hope to step in and help take the program to the next level. I feel experiences both as a player and as a coach will be beneficial to the program."
Collins will begin her responsibilities on September 1. This season she will be primarily working with outfielders, hitters and slappers, while assisting in the recruiting process.
