BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team takes on Jacksonville State twice this week in its final non-conference games of the 2005 season. The Blazers and Gamecocks will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Jacksonville before returning to Birmingham for Wednesday's tilt at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday's game is a make-up contest scheduled after the original meeting on March 16 was postponed due to rain.
The Blazers (29-19, 13-11 C-USA) are coming off a difficult week in which they lost three of four games, all by just one run. 12th- ranked Alabama escaped with a 5-4 victory over UAB by pushing across the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth last Wednesday. The Blazers then dropped two of three games at Conference USA rival Southern Miss last weekend in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles won 4-3 in Friday night's opener before UAB tied the series with an 8-6 victory on Saturday. But Southern Miss rallied from four runs down in the bottom of the seventh and took the series with an 8-7 win in Sunday's finale.
Jacksonville State (25-21, 14-7 OVC) had won seven straight games before dropping the third and final game of their OVC conference series against UT-Martin by a score of 4-3 on Sunday in Jacksonville.
The Blazers are just 12-14 all-time against the Gamecocks, including a 3-2 loss last season in Jacksonville.
