IRVING, Texas - UAB softball players Amanda Antonovich and Lindsay Stanley were each named to the 2005 All-Conference USA Team, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Antonovich was named to the all-freshmen team while the sophomore Stanley garnered second-team honors. UAB had at least one player named all-conference for the sixth-straight season and the Blazers had two players earn all-conference honors for the second year in a row.
"It is a big honor for both players, first of all it is a big honor for Lindsay (Stanley) because she really came on during the latter part of the season and she put the ball in play very well," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "I am excited for her because I think that she is just now beginning to peak and knowing that we have two more years with her in the leadoff spot gets me real excited and it is just a well-deserved honor for Lindsay."
"Then you have Amanda (Antonovich) who just puts her heart and soul into everything she does and it is a tremendous honor for her to be named to the all-conference freshmen team," said Townsend. "It just shows that hard work pays off and she also did a great job toward the latter part of the season pitching, but her bat also came around and she had some huge RBI and some game-winning RBI, as did Lindsay."
Houston's Kristen Glowacz and Louisville's Courtney Moore were named Co-Most Valuable Players, marking the first time in conference history that the honor was shared. Aja Sherman of Louisville was named Pitcher of the Year while USF's Bree Spence was named Freshman of the Year. East Carolina's Tracey Kee was honored as the Coach of the Year.
"For us to finish seventh in conference and come out with two all-conference selections is great and really means a lot," said Townsend.
Antonovich, a left-handed pitcher, designated player and first baseman from Pasco, Wash., went 7-9 on the mound with a 3.36 ERA. She tossed six complete games and earned the Blazers' lone save during the season. Antonovich also batted .223 and had 11 RBI while starting in 34 games at both first base and as the designated player.
Stanley, a Pinson, Ala., native, finished the season with a .335 batting average, which led the team and set a UAB single-season record. She also stole 31 bases to lead the conference, as she was caught just five times all season. The right fielder started in 59 games and led the Blazers with 63 hits, which tied a single-season record.
She tied a conference record for hits in a game (4) when she went 4-6 including the game-winning RBI in a 12-11 victory over Southern Miss on May 1. She finished the season on a 12-game hitting streak and hit safely in 17 of her last 18 games to end the season. Stanley was 9-14 in the Southern Miss series alone, going 9-14 at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases.
