The Blazers enter the weekend with a 26-15 overall record after knocking off Troy, 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. Clint Toomey went 3-for-3 with three RBI and reached base safely in all six at-bats and three UAB senior relievers combined to shut down the Trojan offense over the final four innings with Ryan Huffman earning his fifth win and Eric Roberts picking up his league-leading ninth save. UAB also finds itself in fifth place in Conference USA with a 10-8 mark in league play. The Blazers took two of three games from Cincinnati last weekend in Birmingham.
Toomey leads UAB with a .360 batting average and is tied for the league lead with 36 walks. Toomey's .497 on-base percentage is also good for second in Conference USA.
Charlotte comes to Birmingham with a 24-17 overall record and 7-11 mark in Conference USA. The 49ers dropped an 8-2 decision to Appalachian State last time out on Tuesday in Charlotte. Adam Willard is the 49ers' leading hitter, batting .350 with 14 doubles, three home runs and a team-best 42 RBI. He has also stolen 14 bases in 18 attempts.
The Blazers are 23-18 all-time against Charlotte, including four straight victories and five out of the last six dating back to the 2003 season.
Jeff Brown (6-2, 4.44 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Blazers in Saturday's game two at 2 p.m. He will oppose the 49ers' Adam Mills (5-3, 5.62 ERA). Sunday's starters for both teams are still yet to be determined.
