BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's men's soccer team fought to a tie with both Furman and Conference-USA rival Memphis on Saturday in spring exhibition action at Birmingham's 1996 Soccer Fields. The doubleheader action marked the second to last spring contests for Mike Getman's club.
In the first match of the day Saturday, UAB and Furman fought to a 1-1 tie. The match up was a rematch of the second round NCAA Tournament tilt between the two programs in 2001 - a contest UAB won.
"I thought the Furman match was a good, entertaining soccer match," Getman said. "I thought they controlled the first half and we controlled the second. I was pleased with our effort and our response to them going up 1-0 at halftime."
UAB and Memphis met in the nightcap on Saturday. It was a rematch of the 2004 Conference USA Tournament title game which Memphis won, 3-2. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie this time around.
"It was a very physical match that I thought we dominated," Getman said. "Quite frankly, I don't know if we could have done anything else to play any better. Their keeper made five or six superb saves, including a few late in the match when we peppered them with attempts to win it, but we just couldn't get one to go. I was very proud of our team and the way they played."
The Blazers have one remaining spring exhibition contest before breaking camp until the fall. UAB takes on a team of UAB alumni on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. CT at West Campus Field.
