BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at a frigid George Ward Park.
The Blazers (11-15) took an early 2-0 lead after an inning, but allowed eight runs to the Bulldogs in the top of the third and never recovered. UAB, which has won three of its last five games, saw its record at home drop to 3-3.
Mississippi State starting pitcher Stephanie Comeaux (6-1) scattered five hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high 13 batters. She walked one and gave up all three runs. UAB starter Jennifer Nelson, likewise a freshman, lasted just 2 1/3 innings as she allowed two runs, one earned, and no hits but was hurt by seven walks. She struck out a pair. Amanda Antonovich relieved Nelson (3-4) and worked the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits. She walked four and struck out three.
The Bulldogs, who were held to only six hits in the game, struck for eight runs in the third, all coming with two outs. The big blow was a three-run home run by shortstop Courtney Bures which made it 7-2. MSU took advantage of three UAB errors in the frame to plate all eight runs on four hits.
UAB's Sara Christophel hammered a one-out solo home run to center field in the sixth to make it 8-3. The senior, who was named the Most Valuable Hitter in the 2005 Union State Bank Magic City Classic this past weekend, homered for the second time this season and leads the team with 10 RBI.
Dusti Roberts led the Blazers with a pair of hits and one RBI. Kris Lara put UAB ahead 1-0 in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-out double to left, as the ball landed safely between MSU's left fielder Michelle Kinney and third baseman Tanelda McDonald as the two players' miscommunication allowed the ball to drop safely for a hit. Roberts then followed with a ringing double to the gap in left center for a two-run Blazer lead.
The Blazers will face the Troy Lady Trojans on Wednesday in a doubleheader set for 2 p.m. at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex.
