UAB Softball Team Drops Series Finale To DePaul, 6-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team dropped the rubber game of its Conference USA series to the visiting DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday by a score of 6-0 at George Ward Park.
The Blazers (15-21, 2-4 C-USA) won 2-0 in game two of Friday's doubleheader to set up the decisive game after DePaul blanked UAB 1-0 in the series opener. DePaul improved to 13-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play to stay atop the C-USA standings with its victory on Saturday.
DePaul took a 2-0 lead after its initial at-bat and then added a pair in the third to lead 4-0. The Blue Demons scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-0. DePaul starting pitcher Megan Huitink (5-8) was tough on the UAB lineup on Saturday, limiting the Blazers to just two hits and no runs in six innings of work. She walked one and struck out nine. Leslie Scott relived and pitched the seventh, and allowed just a hit.
Brittany Hodge (2-8) started for UAB and lasted only four batters before being removed in favor of Amanda Antonovich. Hodge walked three and hit a batter and was charged with a pair of runs. The Blue Demons scored both of their first-inning runs without getting a hit. Antonovich pitched four innings and yielded three runs, one earned, and five hits while walking none and striking out two.
Jennifer Nelson, the winner in game two on Friday, pitched the final three innings for UAB and allowed a run on four hits. She walked one batter and struck out five. Third baseman Carrie Christophel collected the Blazers' only hits of the game, as she singled in the second and seventh innings. She was tagged out at second trying to stretch to end the game.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday as UAB begins an eight-game roadtrip with a three-game series at Louisville with a doubleheader set for 2 p.m. UAB then faces Saint Louis on April 1-2 in St. Louis. Mo., before playing at Alabama A&M on April 5 in a doubleheader.
