ATLANTA --- The UAB women's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to a halt Friday, as Georgia State defeated the Blazers, 7-0.
UAB's lone win came at the No. 1 doubles spot, as Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp defeated Mateja Podgorsek and Simona Foltyn, 8-5.
"This was our worst performance of the season," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Georgia State played well and we weren't able to match them. I thought the effort was there from our players, but the results did not come. You have good days and bad days. This was just a bad day. We'll regroup and get ready for next weekend."
Georgia State took the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 tilts. In the No. 2 spot, UAB's Julia von Samson and Antonia Nugent were beaten by Annamaria Forgacs and Birte Koewing, 8-4. Blazers Annemieke Elsholz and Jana Wild fell to Anne Breiholtz and Kiera Strickland, 8-3, in the No. 3 match.
The Blazers (10-4, 2-1) were swept in the singles matches, despite forcing two matches to three sets. UAB's von Samson won the first set of her match at the No. 3 slot, but was blanked in the second and third sets, as she fell to Foltyn, 6-7, 6-0, 6-0. The situation was much the same for Blazer Elsholz in the No. 5 singles position. Elsholz took the first set, 6-4, but lost the second and third, as she was defeated by Koewing, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
UAB fought tough in the other four singles matches, but were unable to tally a victory. In the No. 1 tilt, Blazer Esen was defeated by Forgacs, 7-5, 6-2. UAB's Maier-Knapp fell to Breiholtz, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 4 match, the Blazers' Samrin Tanzeem lost to Podgorsek, 6-3, 6-4, while Strickland defeated UAB's Wild, 7-6, 6-4, in the No. 6 singles position.
Next weekend, the Blazers will host Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee State. UAB face the Lady Eagles on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m., before taking on the Lady Raiders on Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at Brook Highland Racquet Club in Birmingham.
