BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team won its fourth-straight match with a 7-0 blanking of Charleston Southern on Sunday morning. The Blazers won all six singles matches and the doubles point, improving their record to 8-3 on the season.
"I think our depth continues to be the difference for us," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "We were able to come away with an easy win today because of our consistency from top to bottom. I was impressed with Gulsah's (Esen) win at the No. 1 position. This coming week is important to us and this gets us off to a good start."
The Blazers (8-3, 2-1) started the match by taking two of three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp improved to 9-2 on the season with an 8-4 win over Meryam Tazi and Rebecca Franzi at the No. 1 position. In the No. 3 slot, Annemieke Elsholz and Jana Wild defeated Ashley Heard and Nazli Kutuk, 8-2.
UAB swept through singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 tilt, Esen beat Tazi, 6-4, 7-5. At the No. 2 spot, Maier-Knapp was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Franzi, while Julia von Samson defeated Patricia Jaeger, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 position.
