BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kris Lara, a senior on the UAB softball team this season, was honored as a National Strength and Conditioning All-American, it was announced on Thursday by UAB's Director of Physical Development Stacey Torman.
She becomes the third-consecutive UAB softball player to be named an NSCA All-American, as she joins Amanda Ellis (2004) and Candice Hithe (2003) as players which have won the award. Lara, a native of Elk Grove, Calif., is majoring in physical education while pursuing a minor in Spanish. Lara was one of 13 players in the nation named to the list.
Lara's personal-best bench press is 135 pounds and squat is 240 pounds. Her vertical jump is 21 inches and power clean is 140 pounds while Lara was timed at 5.75 in the 40-yard dash.
Lara serves as UAB's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president and is the school's conference and NCAA representative for the committee. She attended the NCAA Leadership Conference in May, 2003 and will also attend this coming May. Lara also attended the NCAA Convention this past January.
"Kris is the most well-rounded athlete that I have had the privilege of coaching," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "This is a well-deserved honor for her because she is a leader on the field, in the classroom, and in the weight room. Kris is a great example for our younger players."
Lara is tied for the team-lead in home runs this season with two and has tallied six RBI despite missing numerous games due to injury.
