BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team will play host to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Wednesday at George Ward Park in a non-conference game set for 6 p.m.
The Blazers (8-12) are coming off a tough weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. as they dropped all five games in the Stanford Invitational, but four of the five losses were by a single run. UAB came close to a major upset last Saturday, as the Blazers led host and No. 4 Stanford early before falling, 5-4 to the Cardinal. The Blazers entered the tournament with a 6-1 mark in one-run contests this season.
UAB and Georgia Tech will be meeting for the first time in history. The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked 19th this week in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, are 13-4 overall but have lost four straight, including a pair of losses to ranked clubs this past weekend.
The Blazers are 3-1 at home this season, which includes a doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M on Feb. 15, and a split with Jacksonville State last Tuesday. The split with the Gamecocks was highlighted by an 8-7 win in 11 innings, a game which lasted nearly four hours.
UAB will stay in town this weekend to participate in the fourth-annual Magic City Classic hosted by Samford University. The Blazers will square off with both Birmingham-Southern and Samford beginning Saturday. UAB is the three-time defending champion of the event. The Magic City Classic is the Blazers' fourth and final tournament of the regular season.
The Blazers will then play a pair of games the following week, playing host to Mississippi State on Tuesday, March 8 at 4 p.m. and then meeting Troy in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in Troy, Ala.
The UAB marketing and promotions department will be handing out 125 UAB pennants to fans attending the game on Wednesday.
