UAB Softball Team Falls To Auburn, 8-1

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The UAB softball team completed play in the Stanford Invitational on Sunday with an 8-1 loss to Auburn at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
The Blazers (8-12) finished 0-5 in the weekend tournament, but four of the five losses were by a single run. UAB entered the tournament with a 6-1 mark in one-run games. Auburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning on a pair of home runs, and then added a single run in the third and three more in the fifth to race out to a 7-0 lead after six innings.
UAB starting pitcher Erica Mascarenas, who had entered the contest with a stellar 1.09 ERA and a perfect 4-0 record, was touched for four runs on four hits in four innings of work. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. Holly Currie was the winner for Auburn, going all seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits. She walked five and struck out seven. Mascarenas, Hodge, Jennifer Nelson, and Amanda Antonovich all pitched for UAB on Sunday,
Ashley Griffin led off the game with a homerun to center, and then Paige Jones went deep with two outs to make it 3-0. Mascarenas had allowed just one home run all season prior to Sunday's game. Sarah Dean made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third in favor of Auburn.
The Tigers put a three-spot up in the fifth as well as Holly Currie belted a three-run home run to left off of reliever Brittany Hodge to make it 7-0. Robin Martin reached on an infield single in the sixth to score Sarah Ghezzi for an 8-0 Tiger lead.
Nicole Whitlock spoiled the Tigers' bid for a shutout as she smashed an RBI double to left to make it 8-1 in the bottom half of the sixth.
The Blazers will welcome Georgia Tech to town on Wednesday, March 2 for a 6 p.m. game at George Ward Park. UAB will then participate in the annual Magic City Tournament next weekend in Birmingham, facing both Birmingham-Southern and Samford.
