Blazers Tally 5-2 Win Over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The UAB women's tennis team defeated Conference USA foe Memphis, 5-2, in Memphis, Tenn., on Sunday morning. The Blazers swept through doubles before taking singles wins at the No. 3-6 slots.
"I thought we played well today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "It was a good win for us because we lost to Memphis last season. Our depth definitely helped us and our doubles play was particularly strong today."
UAB (5-3, 2-1) started the match off strong, with convincing wins at all the doubles positions. In the No. 1 match, Julia von Samson and Antonia Nugent were 8-3 winners over Marlene Dirnstorfer and Brooke Cowie. The Blazers' Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp defeated Memphis' Andrea Feichtinger and Alex Tjioe, 8-4, in the No. 2 tilt. At the No. 3 spot, UAB's Annemieke Elsholz and Jana Wild beat Kristin Noble and Kathrin Kohl, 8-4.
The Blazers dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but the bottom half of the line-up picked up the slack. At the No. 4 position, UAB's Samrin Tanzeem was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over the Lady Tigers' Noble, while Blazer Elsholz defeated Memphis' Christina Wieser, 6-0, 6-2.
Maier-Knapp clinched the win for UAB with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Cowie in the No. 3 slot. The Blazers' Wild tallied an additional win at the No. 6 poisiton, defeating Tijoe, 6-4, 6-0.
Next, UAB hosts Chattanooga at Brook Highland Racquet Club on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
