WESTPORT, Conn. - UAB senior midfielder Rogerio Oliveira has been drafted by the Milwaukee Wave of Major Indoor Soccer. The Wave, one of the eight members of the professional soccer league, selected Oliveira in the fourth round of Tuesday's draft. He is the first Blazer to be drafted by the indoor league.
Oliveira was the 35th player selected overall in the five-round draft. He was one of just five players picked by Milwaukee, which is currently in first place in MISL standings.
"This is a high distinction for both Rogerio and for UAB," Blazer head coach Mike Getman said. "Hopefully, he will be successful in his professional career and open the door for future members of our program to be noticed by the MISL. He has meant a lot to our program and we are thrilled for this opportunity for him."
Oliveira led UAB to Conference USA runner-up finishes in both the 2004 regular season and postseason tournament last season. The Blazers compiled a 12-7 overall record and 7-2 mark in league play with Oliveira at the instrumental central midfield position. He was named third team all-conference and selected to the league's postseason all-tournament team. For his career at UAB, the Bryan, Texas, product scored eight goals and 11 assists and is on the top-10 list of career games played for the Blazers.
