AUBURN, Ala. - The UAB softball team fell to Auburn, 14-0, on Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Blazers (7-6) had their modest two-game winning streak snapped after UAB opened its home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M on Tuesday at George Ward Park in Birmingham. Wednesday's contest marked the Blazers' eighth game in a matter of six days. UAB went 2-3 in the FIU DeLong Invitational last weekend in Miami, Fla.
UAB starting pitcher Amanda Antonovich (0-3) struggled in her inning-plus of work, as she allowed four runs, three earned, while walking three, all of which came in the first inning. Sophomore Brittany Hodge came on in relief of Antonovich and went three innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits and struck out three. She walked one batter.
Auburn starter Beth DiPietro picked up the win to move to 4-0 on the season. She allowed just two hits in five innings of work. She struck out six and walked just two.
The Tigers took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, scoring all three runs with two outs. Right fielder Sarah Ghezzi drove in the first run with a singe to left field to score Kristina McCain, who had earlier reached on a double. Beth DiPietro drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0 and the final run crossed the plate after an error.
Auburn added to its lead in the bottom half of the second as Ashley Griffin homered to right-center field to extend the lead to 4-0 and then the Tigers added three more runs to hold a seven-run lead after two innings. The Tigers posted another four-run inning in the third to get ahead 11-0 after three frames.
The Blazers got their first hits of the game in the top of the fourth inning, and had a runner at third base with one out, but failed to score. Auburn then came back with three more runs in the fourth to extend its lead to the final margin of 14-0.
UAB will next be in action on Tuesday, Feb. 22 when the Blazers welcome Jacksonville State to George Ward Park for a doubleheader set for a 4 p.m. start.
