BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis won four of six singles matches and swept all three doubles en route to a 5-2 victory over visiting Louisiana-Monroe here Sunday.
The Blazers (2-1) dropped singles matches in the top two spots in the lineup but then picked up victories at Nos. 3-6 - all in straight sets. Ornischa Maier-Knapp provided the clinching match with her 6-4, 7-5 win over ULM's Nataliya Ostrovska.
Because of the unfavorable weather forecasts, the coaches from both teams decided to play singles first.
The Indians' Diana Espinal and Noelia Leon took victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles over UAB's Julia von Samson and Gulseh Esen, respectively, for their team's only wins of the afternoon. Louisiana-Monroe fell to 2-3 with the loss.
In addition to Maier-Knapp's win at No. 3, the Blazers also got straight-set victories at No. 4 (Samrin Tanzeem), No. 5 (Annemieke Elsholz) and No. 6 (Antonia Nugent).
"Our depth was the key to victory today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "I think this is probably the deepest team we have had here, and I think it paid off today. "
The Blazers were equally as impressive in doubles, sweeping all three matches to claim the doubles point.
Von Samson and Elsholz were 8-5 winners at No. 1 over Elodie Burlet and Nataliya Ostrovska while Esen and Maier-Knapp teamed at No. 2 for the Blazers to take a 9-8 win over the Indians' Leon and Sithimorada. At No. 3 doubles, UAB's duo of Tangeem and Jana Wild were 8-6 winners over ULM's Pauline Bourdet and Espinal.
