BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jason McLaughlin, a senior forward from Wetumpka, Ala., has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-region team for his play in 2005. McLaughlin was named to the third team for the South Region for NSCAA. He becomes the 20th person so honored in UAB history.
"We are certainly very proud of Jason's career and the season he had this year," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We are also honored that other coaches recognize the quality of player he is. I'm looking forward to seeing him take his game to the next level and playing professionally. He has been a tremendous asset to our program as a player and I'm sure will continue to be as an alumnus."
McLaughlin was UAB's leading scorer in 2005, registering five goals and eight assists for 18 points. He was named second team All-Conference USA for his efforts in helping UAB to a 10-7-1 overall record and third place finish in one of the nation's toughest men's soccer conferences.
McLaughlin garnered national attention for his late-game heroics in UAB's 2-1 win over defending league champion Memphis on Oct. 15. He left that game in the first half with a cut over his right eye, received stitches at a local hospital, then returned to score the game-winning goal with under a minute to play. For the heroics, he was named Conference USA's Offensive Player of the Week, as well as Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week. He was also named to the National Team of the Week for Top Drawer and College Soccer News.
The Wetumpka High School product was Alabama's prep player of the year in the spring of 2000 after setting a national high school record for goals in season with 80 strikes in his senior campaign. McLaughlin played four years for UAB beginning in 2000. He missed the 2001 and 2002 seasons while serving a church mission.
