BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team begins its fall schedule this weekend, as the Blazers head to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational October 7-9. UAB returns seven letterwinners from last season's squad that finished 14-7 overall and placed sixth at the 2005 Conference USA Championships.
"The girls are really excited to get the season going," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "This is the latest we've started the season, so I feel like our team is really prepared. We've been working hard this fall and I think that is going to show in the results."
Leading the Blazers this season will be junior Ornischa Maier-Knapp. Maier-Knapp tallied a 24-9 overall mark during her sophomore campaign, going 11-3 in the fall and 13-6 in dual-match competition.
UAB has entered seven athletes in the four flights of competition. Maier-Knapp and Gulsah Esen will compete in the Flight "A" singles for the Blazers, while Antonia Nugent and Samrin Tanzeem will be in Flight "B". Additionally, Seden Soyalp and Annemieke Elsholz will battle in Flight "C", while Julia von Samson will be UAB's lone representative in Flight "D".
Competing in doubles for the Blazers will be Elsholz and von Samson, as well as Esen and Maier-Knapp in Flight "A". The duo of Nugent and Soyalp will compete in Flight "B" doubles for the Blazers.
The Invitational will be at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center and will have eight other schools competing in the event.
