LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Janey Deimling shot back-to-back rounds of six-over par 78 to lead UAB's contingent at the 2005 Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky on Saturday. Deimling and the Blazers stand in 15th place in a difficult field after team scores of 330-344 through 36 holes.
"We were a little rough around the edges today," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "We were at a disadvantage a bit because Martha (Hudson) isn't yet able to play 36 holes in a day. Without her in the second round, we needed all four players to shoot low. We've got a lot a work to do. We've got two new players on the team and they're having to learn a lot fast. We will get better as time goes on and hopefully even show a marked improvement tomorrow."
Hudson, who fired an 85 in the first round, was only cleared to play 18 holes in a day by team doctors two weeks ago. She had offseason shoulder surgery to repair loose cartilage. While she withdrew from Saturday's second round, she will play in Sunday's third round. Her score can count toward the team total as well.
Deimling is tied for 41st out of 81 golfers at 12-over par. Freshman Christina Wentworth trimmed five shots off her first round 85 with a UAB career-best 80 in the second round. She is tied for 69th overall. Sophomore Ashlee Claydon went for rounds of 86-88 and junior Lois Jones carded rounds of 82-98 for the Blazers.
Perennial SEC power Florida fired team scores of 296-288 to surge into the team lead. North Carolina is six shots back and in second place with host Kentucky, which led after the first round. Miami (Fla.) and Conference USA member East Carolina round out the top five.
Florida's Mallory Blackwelder is running away with the individual medalist honors thus far. Her five-under par performance through 36 holes (68-71) is five shots ahead of second place which is occupied by Kentucky's Beth Felts and Gator teammate Ornella Jouven, who are at even par.
The 54-hole tournament is being played at UK's University Club Big Blue Course in Lexington, Ky. It is a par-72, 6,150-yard course. The third and final 18-hole round will be played Sunday.
