FRANKLIN, Tenn. - The UAB men's golf team shot a 2-over par 570 on Monday at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club to finish the day in a tie for sixth place.
The Blazers, the defending tournament champions, shot rounds of 289-281 to enter the final round of play tied with Florida State, and just 10 shots out of second place. Georgia State blistered the course on Monday, firing a 20-under par 548 to lead the 15-team field after 36 holes. Georgia State's Ty Harris is the leading individual at 11-under 131, after shooting 63-68 on Monday. Harris' first-round 8-under 63 tied a Championship record.
UAB senior Ryan Thomas led the Blazers on the tournament's first day by firing a 3-under par 139, which was good for a tie for seventh place. Thomas' teammate Kaylor Timmons shot even par 142 to finish the day tied for 24th place. The Blazers' Will Wilcox shot a 2-over 144 to tie for 35th. Junior Clark Brown is in a tie for 42nd place after shooting a 3-over 145. Nathan Turner turned in a 15-over 157.
"I thought we played well today against a tough field," said UAB head coach Alan Kaufman. "We had some good scores and are in decent position, and would obviously like to be higher, but Georgia State shot lights out today."
"We just need to get back out there tomorrow and put some low numbers up on the board and see where that puts us, said Kaufman.
Ole Miss is in second place behind leader Georgia State after shooting an 8-under 560. Host Vanderbilt is third at 5-under 563, while SMU stands in fourth place at 2-under 566. Alabama rounds out the top five after posting a 1-under 567.
The third and final round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Blazers finished 12th at the Inverness Intercollegiate in their first tournament of the season on Sept. 12.
