UAB Women's Tennis Drops Match To Louisville, 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- The UAB women's tennis team started the match off well by winning the doubles point, but couldn't take the match as fifth-seeded Louisville defeated the 11th-seeded Blazers, 4-1, in the first round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship here Thursday at Seneca Park.
"I think the girls did a great job in doubles," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "In singles, we could have played better, but I'm not sure it would have made a difference. Louisville is a good team. We just have to get ready for Saint Louis."
UAB (11-14, 4-6) took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Blazers' Nadia Dellarciprete and Samrin Tanzeem were 8-5 winners over Louisville's Paige Eber and Christina Gogol in the No. 3 tilt. At the No. 2 spot, UAB's Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson defeated the Cardinals' Kelly Taylor and Natalie Laszkowski, 9-7, to clinch the point for the Blazers.
Femke de Boer and Marrit Jansma of UAB lost at the No. 1 slot, falling to UL's Julia Hierl and Michelle Spiess, 8-5.
However, Louisville came roaring back in singles, winning four matches and tallying the victory. In the No. 3 match, the Blazers' Jansma was a 6-0, 6-1 loser to Louisville's Taylor. The Cardinals' Hierl defeated UAB's von Samson, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. In the No. 5 tilt, Louisville's Laszkowski was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over the Blazers' Dellarciprete.
The Cardinals clinched the match when UAB's de Boer fell to the Cardinals' Spiess, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot.
The No. 2 and No. 5 matches were not completed after Louisville clinched the win.
The Blazers fall to the consolation bracket and will take on Saint Louis Friday at 9 a.m.
