UAB Women's Tennis Loses To Winthrop, 4-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team was defeated by Winthrop, 4-0, here Sunday afternoon. The Blazers tallied a win at No. 1 doubles, but were unable to record another victory.
"It was closer than the score indicates, " said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "We had several singles matches that went to the third set, but we decided to stop those once the match was decided."
The Blazers (2-8) were victorious at the No. 1 doubles position, as UAB's Femke de Boer and Marrit Jansma defeated the Eagles' Paula Takahashi and Renata Caceres, 8-6. However, Winthrop (3-0) took the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. In the No. 2 match, Winthrop's Ana Paula Novaes and Renata Barreto were 9-7 winners over the Blazers' Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson. In the No. 3 tilt, UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete and Samrin Tanzeem fell to the Eagles' Danielle Moitz and Jenny Andrade, 8-5.
Winthrop continued its winning, by taking three singles matches for the victory. At the No. 2 position, the Eagles' Takahashi beat UAB's Elsholz, 6-1, 7-6. In the No. 5 spot, the Blazers' Dellarciprete was defeated, 6-2, 6-1, by Winthrop's Andrade. Finally, the Eagles' Caceres beat UAB's Tanzeem, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 6 match.
The two teams then agreed to stop the remaining three singles matches, giving Winthrop the 4-0 win.
Next, UAB hosts Jacksonville State on Wednesday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
