BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team shot a 6-over par 574 on Monday on day one of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate held at Old Overton Golf Club to finish the day in 10th place.
The Blazers, coming off a fourth-place tie at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate last month, were led by freshman Will Wilcox on Monday, who shot a 1-under par 141 to tie for 25th place. Senior Ryan Thomas is in a tie for 35th place after shooting a 2-over par 144, tied with teammate Chris Cousins.
Sophomore Garrett Osborn is tied for 41st place after posting a 3-over 145 in round one, and freshman Kaylor Timmons is alone in 50th place at 13-over 154.
The nation's top-ranked team, Oklahoma State and second-ranked Georgia tech are tied for the lead after two rounds after the Cowboys and Yellow Jackets each shot a 16-under 552 to lead the 12-team field. Augusta State is in third place at 15-under 553. Alabama (554) and Georgia (556) round out the top five as the top of the leader board is extremely crowded.
"We did not play too bad today, obviously we could have shot a little better, but this is a field loaded with good teams and everyone has their work cut out for them," said UAB head coach Alan Kaufman. "We hope to finish up strong tomorrow."
The 12-team field includes eight teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Coaches' Poll, including the top three teams in the nation. Oklahoma State, the current leader, is the defending tournament champion after beating Georgia by four strokes to take home the title.
Four golfers are tied for the individual lead after 36 holes of play, as several low numbers were put up on Monday. The leaders are at 6-under 136.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with the teams teeing off at 7 a.m.
