BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will be holding its second annual Blazer Bash on Friday at 7 p.m. at The Great Hall at the Hill University Center. The celebration features a Hawaiian theme and will be an opportunity for Blazer fans to meet the 2003-04 UAB softball team.
The UAB players and coaching staff chose a Hawaiian theme for Friday's activities because the Blazers will open their 2004 season at the Chevron Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. UAB is scheduled to compete in the prestigious four-day tournament against BYU, Hawaii, Loyola-Marymount, Oregon State and Tennessee.
Friday night's Blazer Bash is a good opportunity for family, friends and fans to meet the 2003-04 softball team, including heralded freshman Holly Krzan.
Krzan, who was recently named to the USA Junior National Team, will be traveling to Chula Vista, Calif., to train at the USA Olympic Softball Training Camp prior to heading to China for the International Softball Federation's Women's World Championships held Oct. 11-20.
During Friday's festivities, past and present members of the Blazer softball team will be recognized by various esteemed members of the UAB Athletic Department. Judy Sackfield, the Assistant Athletic Director of Academics, will present the softball team with the Community Service Award and will recognize UAB's NFCA Academic All-Americans and Conference USA Academic Honor winners.
UAB's individual award winners will also be honored on Friday in regards to the numerous accomplishments that were garnered throughout the 2003 season.
The UAB softball team will also be in action on Saturday at 11 a.m., as the Blazers face off against a number of former players in the 2003 Alumni Game held at George Ward Park Field #6 on Greensprings Highway.
