BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team recorded its second shutout of the 2003 season on Friday as the Blazers blanked the South Alabama Jaguars, 2-0, in the second match of the UAB Nike Classic held at West Campus Field.
In the opening contest of Friday's four-team competition, Samford (3-1-1) registered a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern (2-2) in double overtime.
UAB (3-0) remained undefeated on the season against unranked opponents and outshot the Jaguars, 26-7. In the nightcap of the 2003 UAB Nike Classic, the Blazers accumulated 13 shots on goal and held South Alabama (2-3) to only three.
"I was very pleased with our mentality going into the game," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We struggled a bit last week against Clemson, but today we came out and kept a consistent mentality throughout the game and I felt good about our attacking style of play. We did a good job of getting a lot of shots, but we have to do a better job of finishing and finding simpler ways to score goals."
With the overall score of Friday's match knotted at 0-0, UAB's Jenny Rynders broke to the net and scored off of a precise, cross-field pass from midfielder Liz Bosscher with 31:23 remaining in the contest. Bosscher, the Blazers' junior from Louisville, Ky., started the goal-scoring play as she gathered a loose ball, outran a South Alabama defender and sent a 35-yard crossing pass from right to left to Rynders.
The game-winning goal was Rynders' second of the season and the assist was Bosscher's first of the 2003 campaign.
"We always seem to play with a lot more confidence once we score our first goal," Harbin said. "I don't know if we get the proverbial 'monkey off of our back', but we do tend to relax and realize that we can get some scores. Once we get that first goal, it's like we break through a barrier and we believe that we can go down and get some more."
At the 77:15 mark in Friday's intrastate contest, UAB added its second goal of the evening when Tara Kidwell slammed home a deflected shot by South Alabama's goalkeeper Amber Angermeier.
With the Blazers on the attack, senior Jill Knottek shook a Jaguar defender in the box and placed a pinpoint pass to Jessica Barr. Barr one-timed the pass, but Angermeier made a brilliant diving save only to have the ball rebound directly to Kidwell who put it in the net. The score proved to be Kidwell's second of the season.
UAB's freshman goalkeeper Katie Forbis played her share of stellar defense on Friday and recorded a shutout in her first collegiate start. The native of Memphis, Tenn., made three outstanding saves against South Alabama and defended against seven shots.
The UAB women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 14, as the Blazers host the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles at approximately 2 p.m. at West Campus Field. In Sunday's first match, Samford will take on South Alabama at noon.
