HOLYWELL TOWN, Wales ----- Junior Jarbas Carlos had two goals and an assist, while freshman Lukasz Kwapisz added a goal and an assist to lead the UAB men's soccer team over Holywell Town F.C., 4-1, here Monday night. Each of the Blazers four goals came in the second half of the contest.
"I think our guys did a great job of settling down after halftime," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We were able to take control of the match once our guys realized they could play with this club."
After defeating Chester City F.C., 3-1, earlier in the afternoon, the Blazers began the game on a slow note. Holywell had several scoring opportunities in the opening half, finally capatilizing in the 17th minute, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time the Blazers have trailed in any contest while in England.
UAB came out with renewed energy to begin the second half. Their hard work paid off in the 57th minute when Carlos received a pass from Kwapisz, dribbled around the keeper and scored the equalizer.
After a successful penalty kick in the 73rd minute by Jose Rayo, which gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead, UAB put the game away with two goals in two minutes. At the 81:31 mark, Carlos received a cross from freshman Michael Biggs and hit a volley into the back of the net. Kwapisz then finished off the scoring at the 82:57 mark with a strike from 25-yards out which sailed over the keeper's head, resulting in the final score.
The Blazers, which are 4-0 on their preseason trip in England and Wales, has two contests remaining. UAB will play Denbigh Town Football Club on Tuesday, August 19, followed by its finale against Halkyn F.C. on Wednesday, August 20. Both games kick-off at 7 p.m. local time.
